Invented the zig-zag method for revolving the cylinder. In June 1840 he got a trial of his rifle by the Navy, "The board are of the opinion that the general construction of this rifle and the manner in which the cylinders are shifted and secured, together with its entire arrangement, is more simple and less liable of derangement than any arm of the kind that they have seen." Nutting tried to sell his patent to Colt but with no success. Only a few Nutting rifles are known. |
